The German champion has celebrated a successful debut at the Hamburg Wheelchair Open! Britta Wend reached the quarter-finals at the Hamburg Rothenbaum facility on the opening day of the largest German women's wheelchair tennis tournament, which is internationally part of the highest category of the Premier Tour.
Wend beat Great Britain's Lucy Shuker 7-5, 6-1 and was not only satisfied with her performance afterwards but also highly impressed by the atmosphere. „I started a bit nervously, partly because there were quite a lot of fans. We're not always that used to it. After going 0-3 down in the first set, things loosened up a bit and I got into my stride a bit better. At the latest in the second set, I was playing really well. The organisation of this tournament is superb. The venue is also ideal for it, everything is wonderfully accessible. Sandra and her team are doing a great job of fully integrating us. Wheelchair tennis is getting a great platform here,“ explained Wend, who will now compete against French French Open finalist Ksenia Chasteau. „She's a very strong player. I think you can expect a very fast-paced game with spectacular rallies. I'm really looking forward to that,“ Wend said in anticipation.
Wildcard player Katharina Krüger has also been eliminated after losing 0:6, 3:6 to Jinte Bos (Netherlands). Both Wend and Krüger are still active in the doubles competition on Friday.
Also on Friday, the two top seeds, Aniek van Koot and Lizzie de Greef from the Netherlands, will enter the tournament. A total of four top 10 players will be competing at the Hamburg Wheelchair Open. Play is scheduled to begin on Court M1 at 10:30 AM.
