The former top 10 player and French Open semi-finalist as tournament ambassador: Andrea Petkovic is the face of the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open.
Andrea Petkovic broke new ground in 2021 with her job as tournament ambassador for the Hamburg WTA tournament and was immediately hooked after receiving a call from tournament director Sandra Reichel.
"I'm looking forward to this new task. It's very important to me to keep tennis alive in Germany, and if it's no longer possible as a player at some point, I've always wanted to make my contribution in other ways." (Andrea Petkovic, in the year 2021)
And Andrea Petkovic was more than ready for it! While she made it to the final at the 2021 WTA tournament, she had to retire in the quarter-finals in 2022 due to injury against the eventual finalist Anett Kontaveit and finally ended her active career as an athlete in September 2022.
The Darmstadt native will be behind the scenes at the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open as well as at various events, interviews with players and meet & greets. Nice to have you with us, dear Petko!
What did Andrea Petkovic take away from her first appearance as a tournament ambassador?
"I think it will make me more humble when I go to tournaments in the near future. I now realise how much work goes into it and how many people are involved. As tennis players, we are always a bit selfish. We are interested in how we play, what results we achieve and nothing else. I think I'll be a little more sensitive to the fact that press and media work is also important to promote the tournament so that everyone is happy in the end. Because without the tournaments, the players wouldn't be there either."
