HawkEye

"German Tuesday"

after Schunk-Show!

The MSC Hamburg Ladies Open is really picking up speed - and so are the German players. Four local heroes are in action on centre court today. And there's even a German duel!

But one thing at a time: Starting off from a German perspective Noma Noha Akugue! The 2023 Reinbek Senastion finalist returns to the scene of the greatest success of her career and will face Title defender Anna Bondar. The duel between two strong clay court players promises high tension - and is our "Match of the Day"!

By the way: Tournament ambassador Andrea Petkovic is now officially "on court" at the tradition-steeped Rothenbaum in Hamburg. After her TV appearances at Wimbledon, she swapped London for Hamburg, the River Thames for the River Elbe - and the sacred grass court for the traditional clay court, "where we all kind of started", as she enthuses. "I'm looking forward to finally seeing clay court tennis again. Now to go back to where the talent is built up, where the next generation plays, who have to fight their way through to get to Wimbledon one day. I like this contrasting programme," says the player from Darmstadt, who plays on Lois Boisson as the tournament winner.

Andrea Petkovic

The surprise semi-finalist at the French Open, who stormed to the top of the world rankings at Roland Garros, will play her Hamburg debut against Julia Grabher from Austria. You really shouldn't miss out on this.

Then, not before 5 p.m., it's the turn of another woman from Hamburg: Tamara Korpatsch will be hoping for vociferous support from the crowd for their match against Raluka Gerhan from Cyprus in order to reach the round of 16 at their home ground. So fans, you know what you have to do!

At the end of the day, two German qualifiers have a great opportunity to reach the last 16 of a WTA tournament for the first time in their careers. This is what both Caroline Werneras well as the Stuttgart-based Valentina Steiner not to be missed!

Steiner, who is just 18 years old and ranked number 692 in the world, has already pulled off a huge surprise by making it into the main draw! In other words: At least one German will follow Nastasja Schunk into the round of 16 today. She deservedly defeated Moyuka Uchijima (Japan) 7:5 and 6:3 on Monday evening, putting in a very courageous performance and was quite rightly celebrated afterwards. From the German point of view, things can go on like this - preferably today! After all, we have four aces up our sleeve.

TATJANA MARIA

In top form at the Rothenbaum

Welcome to Hamburg! Germany's number one played in the final on Sunday on the grass courts of Newport on the east coast of the USA. Although Maria lost 6:2, 4:6 and 2:6 to Caty McNally (USA), this appearance in the final was also an expression of her terrific form. At the age of 37, she is having the tennis summer of her life and has thus shot up to 36th place in the world rankings.

She has now arrived at the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open with plenty of tailwind. Nice to have you here, Tatjana!

SCHOOL ACTION

More than 300 pupils celebrated the start of the school campaign at this year's MSC Hamburg Ladies Open yesterday. Among them: Tamara Korpatsch, who was on hand to answer questions from curious pupils at the first school press conference. It continues today - with activities in collaboration with Airbus, student press conferences and plenty of inspiration for the next generation.

ALL THE BEST, EVA!

Eva Lys cancels start in Hamburg for health reasons

The Hamburg local heroine, seeded fourth, had to inform the tournament organisers on Monday evening that she would be withdrawing from the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open. The reason for this is a bout of rheumatism that the 23-year-old has been suffering from since the tournament in Wimbledon. Due to the special significance of the tournament for the Hamburg native, she had hoped until the last minute that she would be able to take part, but then decided that it was not possible at the present time for health reasons. We wish you all the best!

"It is with a heavy heart that I have to inform you today that I have to cancel my participation in this year's MSC Hamburg Ladies Open. Since Wimbledon, I have been struggling with a bout of rheumatism, which does not allow me to train as usual or play matches at the level I expect from myself - and above all - which you deserve.

I hoped until the very end that it would somehow work out. I tried everything to be able to compete in my home town, but my body showed me very clearly in the last training session that it was still too early.

The decision not to compete was anything but easy for me. The MSC Hamburg Ladies Open is a very special tournament for me - not just in sporting terms, but also emotionally. Being able to play in front of a home crowd means a lot to me and I was really looking forward to the support of the fans and the special atmosphere in Hamburg.

I would like to thank the organising team and all the fans for their understanding and support during this phase. I very much hope to be back on the court soon - and next year again in Hamburg."

NorDDEUTSCHE MÄDELS

Out with applause!

Two young North German hopefuls, two strong performances: Anna Petkovic and Tessa Brockmann fought for a place in the main draw at the Rothenbaum on Monday - and left their hearts on the court.

Petkovic played a high-class match with the experienced Serbian Aleksandra Krunic and was only beaten 6:4, 2:6, 6:7(5) in the third set tie-break. Brockmann challenged her compatriot Caroline Werner in two tight sets, but was narrowly defeated 5:7, 5:7.

OUR TEAM

Players Services & WTA Aces

A lot goes on behind the scenes at the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open - thanks to a well-coordinated team. This week we introduce you to various teams who make a decisive contribution to the tournament being able to take place at all.

Today, we are continuing with the team that ensures that the players feel at home - on and off the pitch - with an overview, calmness and an open ear.

Josh, Alex & Dennis make sure that the players are perfectly happy.

Tasks/ daily routine

The Players Services team ensures that the players want for nothing and that they can prepare for their matches in the best possible way. This includes coordinating the training courts and providing them with towels and balls. Co-operation with ball kids and line judges is also important.

As part of the WTA-ACES programme, the team also coordinates all media appointments and sponsor events for the players in close cooperation with the WTA.

Anecdotes

Josh: "Gabriela Ruse's run in 2021 - from qualifying to winning the tournament - was a real highlight. Experiencing these emotions up close was simply unforgettable."

Dennis: "2023 was a very special year: with Zverev as the winner, Krawietz/Pütz's doubles title and Noma Noha Akugue's impressive run to the final - it will definitely be remembered."

Clara: Clara was fully committed to her first tournament in Hamburg - polite, dedicated and always ready to help. When she wanted to quickly organise a shuttle for a player, she resolutely approached a supposed driver. What she didn't realise was that the "driver" was none other than the coach Christopher Kas.

What makes the job so special for you?

Alex"Tennis is my life and I really enjoy taking part in tennis tournaments and making my contribution to the success of the tournament."

Josh"For me, there's nothing better than experiencing the emotions up close and being directly involved in the action."

Clara: "But the best thing for me is the team: it's a togetherness that is really special. Everyone pulls together, almost like one big family. My general minimum is: there are no problems, only challenges."
