Tatjana Maria sensationally secured victory at the traditional British grass court tournament at London's Queen's Club last Sunday. Her triumph in the final over Amanda Anisimova from the USA catapulted the 37-year-old right-hander to 43rd place in the world rankings. This coup in the WTA 500 tournament is the biggest success of her career and makes her the new German No. 1. These are the best prerequisites for her Hamburg debut. Tatjana Maria will make her debut at the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open at Hamburg's Rothenbaum from 13 to 20 July 2025.
"It really means a lot to me to be able to play in Hamburg for the first time and to serve at one of Germany's most historic women's tournaments. I'm really looking forward to the home crowd and hope that many fans will come to the Rothenbaum in Hamburg," says Tatjana Maria, who forms a perfect team with her two daughters and her husband. When Tatjana Maria plays, the family is there. It will be the same in Hamburg.
Tatjana Maria has been on the professional tour since 2001. She has won four WTA tournaments to date - before her success on the grass in Queens, she won on clay in Bogotá in 2022 and 2023 and on grass in Mallorca in 2018. Can she now achieve her first home win, the long-awaited triumph at a German tournament? That is absolutely conceivable, as she is currently in excellent form. Before her appearance on the Hamburg clay, she will play at Wimbledon. She reached the semi-finals there in 2022 and her victory in Queens has now pushed her back into the wider field of favourites.
Tatjana Maria plays eye-catching tennis: her style is almost unique, her one-handed backhand is feared in WTA circles and even the absolute top players often have no answer to her sophisticated slice game. Two Grand Slam winners, Elena Rybakina (2022 Wimbledon winner) and reigning Australian Open winner Madison Keys, were no match for her in Queens.
Tournament director Sandra Reichel is correspondingly enthusiastic about Maria's commitment: "Tatjana Maria is a role model in every respect. She is an admirable woman who has shown for many years that you can also be a top tennis player as a mother. Her success at the WTA 500 tournament in Queens is more than deserved. I am very proud to welcome her to the MSC Hamburg Ladies Open 2025."
"I am delighted that Tatjana Maria has agreed to perform and that we will be able to see her live in Hamburg. She is an excellent example of what you can achieve with perseverance, enjoyment of what you do and discipline! She inspires me anew every time I see her play. I'm delighted that the Hamburg audience will also be able to enjoy this," added tournament ambassador Andrea Petkovic.
The MSC Hamburg Ladies Open will be contested by Tatjana Maria - who won as a qualifier in Queens - and Eva Lys, currently the highest-ranked German players.
