Medvedev and Tsitsipas lead Hamburg European Open entry list

The entry list for the 2020 Hamburg European Open has been revealed and is led by World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev of Russia. The 24-year-old Moscow native will be joined at the prestigious Rothenbaum tournament by fellow top 10 players Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, Italy’s Matteo Berrettini, Frenchman Gael Monfils and David Goffin of Belgium. Tsitsipas, Berrettini and Goffin will come to the traditional clay-court event in Germany’s second-largest city for the first time.

Medvedev, a seven-time champion on the ATP Tour and runner-up to Rafael Nadal at last year’s US Open, will make his second appearance in Hamburg. Back in 2016, Medvedev battled through the qualifying to reach the round of the last 16.

Further top 20 players

2013 Rothenbaum champion Fabio Fognini of Italy, Roberto Bautista Agut from Spain, last year’s finalist Andrey Rublev of Russia, 2019 Munich winner Cristian Garin from Chile as well as Next-Gen-ATP Canadians Denis Shapovalov and Felix Auger-Aliassime round out the names of players currently ranked inside the top 20. After struggling with injuries, 2018 Wimbledon finalist Kevin Anderson from South Africa entered the tournament with his protected ranking of World No. 14.

Basilashvili eyes Hamburg three-peat

Reigning champion Nikoloz Basilashvili from Georgia will also return to Hamburg. The World No. 27 is seeking his third title in a row following his triumphs in Northern Germany in 2018 as well as in 2019. Young guns Taylor Fritz from the United States and Australia’s Alex de Minaur are also part of the line-up.

“Our entry list will delight many tennis fans in Hamburg. There are many stars of the new generation that we have not seen here yet,” said tournament director Sandra Reichel. “The list might change a bit until the tournament kicks off, as the players’ final participation depends on their previous performances at the events in New York and Rome. Nonetheless, we can expect an excellent line-up”, she added.

Originally scheduled for July, but postponed due to the global outbreak of COVID-19, the ATP 500 clay-court event will now be held on September 19 to 27, one week ahead of the French Open at Roland Garros.

The tournament will be hosted in accordance with strict hygiene protocols at the renovated Rothenbaum Tennis Stadium with a capacity of 10,000 seats. However, due to the ongoing social distancing rules in Germany, the number of spectators that will be allowed to attend the matches will be reduced. There are on-going talks with the Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg about the appropriate number of fans.
